The sustainability debate has thrown a new spanner into the active vs passive investing conundrum. The move from active to passive over the last few years has been primarily dominated by the low-cost trend but many investors are now faced with the question of whether active managers can add more value in identifying sustainable investment strategies that are better aligned to investors’ ESG goals. As well as a boom in the launch of green strategies by active managers, the demand for sustainability has also led to a surge in passive ESG funds and the addition of new and improved ESG indices. This panel session will explore the latest challenges faced by asset owners and consultants when selecting managers and debate on whether sustainability will be the catalyst to cause a further divergence in the active vs passive trend.
